C.     Learning from Excellent TEYL Programs and Responding to the Challenges

1. TEYL  comes in different forms and intensity of practice

-          modest time (1-1,5 hours per week) --- VERY WEAK IMPACTS

-          significant time (20-30% using English to teach other subjects) --- STRONGER IMPACTS

-          substantial time (50-90% using English to teach other cont3nt subjects --- STRONGEST IMPACTS.

2. Effective Teachers of English can fluently use English for functional communicative purposes, including for instructional purposes.

3. Excellent teachers of English who know children are and how these children learn.

children learn from direct experiences, children learn from hands-on physical

activities, children’s thinking is embedded in her-and-now content of situation,

children learn holistically from whole to parts using scripts, and children have a

short memory span.
      4. Excellent English teacher to young learners know how children acquire a language.

There are three components represent a requirement for learning to happen: 

exposure-engagement-supports.

5. Excellent English teachers take a responsibility to ensure children’s English Learning.

            1. Use English to provide exposure to functional language use.

            2. Provide print-rich environment in English.

            3. Focus on functional English for vocabulary development and immediate.

    communicative needs fulfillment.

            4. Reiterate often to ensure acquisition

            5. Establish useful, acquisition-promoting routine.

D.    Can Indonesia Handle the Challenge?

1. Choose only excellent TEYL teachers.

2. Teachers should be discipline in using English.

3. Apply a merit-system in managing teachers’ work and payment.

How to Instruction in The Midst of The Pandemic

We need to ensure that we are still able to deliver quality instructions with the help of technology.
- Technology used will be maximized wit considerations to the capacities and limitations of the situation most especially, of the students and the teacher. 
- Run a quick survey or conduct an informal interview (online) to have an audit of the students’ capacity to connect online.
- The survey may also be used for knowing the learners’ preferred online activities in learning English.

Sudden Shift and Visible Differences

- Before: Students has to go to school and prepare their pen and paper for exams.
- After: Students need to go online and prepare their phone or laptop to online learning.

Hybrid Online Learning

- Synchronous Learning: Activities that happen in real-time, usually via video conferencing (live class, consultation period, weekly synthesis, quarterly assessment.
- Asynchronous Learning: online learning activities that student can do on their own and at heir own pace, within a reasonable time frame (google classroom, printed textbook, Koobits, MathScore, SciLearn, and extracurricular activities.



3. Synchronous EYL Instructions: Scheming from Minute One to Thirty of Jolly Activities by Rina Wahyu Setyaningum, M. Ed and M. Reza Pahlevi, M.Pd as a Moderator.

During remote learning, your student need to see their teacher attractive.
1st step is check that he systems are working.
2nd step is set the agenda and time, 30 minutes.

Lesson Planning

1. Opening/introduction for 5 minutes. There are greetings like, “good morning, students!” next tell to them about day and date, after that tell about the topic that would you explain and in the last of opening part is of course open your class, you can open the class with singing together with your students.
2. Body movement for 2 minutes. For the children they likes to study but still fun, so you can add the dance time before explain the topic. You can use any song, example: zumba for kids. Of course, you as a teacher should to dance too.
3. Topic explanation for 7 minutes. When you’re explaining the topic you can use any media, like video, picture, or power point that contain fun explanations there.
4. Next is, reading aloud for 7 minutes, story time welcome song.
5. Transition for 1 minute. Tell the student to get ready for craft time. Introducing supplies for teaching by naming them in English.
6. Crafting time for 5 minutes.
7. Closing times. You can asking the students’ feeling about the lesson, like “Are you happy about our time today?” after that you can reviewing the lesson and concluding it. Last, you can closing the class. You can use a unique password like singing the closing song.
